1. FoodCine.ma 2016
Food Cinema Things to do in May 2016
FoodCine.ma – a film festival devoted to food – is an offshoot of A Design Film Festival, both organised by creative agency Anonymous. The line-up is a homonymous eight ('ate', geddit?) feature-length films and eight shorts that are screening from April 29 to May 14. Seven documentaries, including Barista, Cooking up a Tribute – it follows the Roca brothers in their three-Michelin-starred restaurant – and The Birth of Sake, are making their Asian debut at Objectifs, while Tasteology, a film about the science of flavour, makes its world premiere at the festival, too.

2. A-Go-Go Night

Singapore’s music scene was swingin’ and thriving back in the ’60s, reigned by The Swallows, The Siglap Five and The Quests. In this concert presented by the Malay Heritage Centre, discover how their legacies continue to inspire the bands of today as the likes of The Pinholes, The Voodoo Sound and Lion City Ska Jazz Ensemble take the stage. This is happening on May 7th and 8th.

Indoor films are screened based on the theme of ‘memory’ and Gillman Barracks’ rich past, in a space once occupied by the Army Kinema Corporation, the British army’s source of movies back in the ’50s.

5. Istana Open House

Istana only opens its doors to the public five times a year - that’s Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Labour Day, National Day, and Deepavali. Come Sunday, Labor day, you'll get the opportunity to tour the Istana Main Building (for a small fee), you can also take guided tours through the gardens (also with a small fee). Use this opportunity to teach the little ones about flora and fauna, and maybe learn a bit about our history while you’re at it.
